Acrylic on Cereal Box
This mixed-media piece, titled “Silly Rabbit,” juxtaposes the vibrant, consumerist facade of a Trix cereal box with a dense, monochromatic exploration of Weltschmerz.
The left side retains the familiar, saccharine imagery: the iconic Trix rabbit, the bright red background, and the tantalizingly colorful cereal puffs. This symbolizes the superficial, easily digestible joy promised by commercial culture.
A sharp, jagged line dissects the image, giving way to an intricate, dizzying pen-and-ink drawing on the right. This black-and-white landscape is a visual manifestation of “world-weariness”—a feeling of sorrow and melancholy from the perceived inadequacy or suffering of the world. Swirling organic forms, sharp lines, and abstract faces create a turbulent, internalized reality that stands in stark opposition to the childhood innocence on the left. It’s a striking commentary on the psychic tension between marketed happiness and existential unease.
